You can see my how-to video of how to make homemade laundry detergent here:
I only spend $10-12 for the supplies to last for a years worth of detergent. I have a 5 gallon bucket and I make a large batch every 3 months usually.
Here is the recipe:
- 1 bar Fels Naptha soap
- 1 1/2 cups Borax
- 1 1/2 cups Washing soda
- 5 gallon bucket
Optional: If you want your soap to have some sort of scent you can scent this with ½ to 1 oz. of essential oil or fragrance oil of your choice.
After 24 hours it will be very gelled, but I use a whisk and mixing spoon and stir it several times while it sets and it has stays at a nice consistency.
* The detergent does not bubble in the wash but it is cleaning!
* If yours did not gel correctly after 24 hours then use more soap next time....like 1/2 bar, but you can still use it if it isn't very gelled anyway.
* When it sets you may get a "egg drop soup" effect.....just mix/stir with a whisk or blender.
- I originally used Crystal's recipe but tweaked the recipe as shown above and this cleans better for me and even my husband's dirty work clothes!
Hey Bev! Just wanted to let you know I'm going to try your laundry detergent recipe. I couldn't find any of the Fels Naptha soap at Wal-Mart or local grocery store, so I picked up some bars of Ivory. Would this work just as well?
ReplyDeleteHey Sharon thanks for the comment. I've never personally tried Ivory but I have heard others use it and it more gentle of a soap than fels naptha. Let me know how it works for you!

I have been using your " Laundry recipe " for about 4 months now, ans I love it. I was a little skeptical at first, and only used it on towels and my husband's work clothes, and when I was " convinced " they were clean..lol..I started using it on everything else, and I LOVE IT !! It's not that I don't have the 10-14 dol to spend on detergent twice a month, I just got SICK of having to shell it out. And, I am following your new meal tips too..I can't wait to get my grocery bill lower !
ReplyDeleteWow that's great Rebekah! I'm glad I could help! ;)

Hi Rebekah,
ReplyDeleteWhere would I buy Washing Soda? What does it look like? I can't wait to try this recipe.
Hey Pam, I assume you are asking me the question but thought my name was Rebekah maybe? Well I'm Bev, the blog author and will answer your question lol. :)
ReplyDeleteWashing soda can be bought in the grocery aisle at your grocery store. Or if you can't find it there, it is called "soda ash" at pool/spa supply stores.
The chemical name for washing soda is sodium carbonate, but don't confuse it with baking soda, which is sodium BIcarbonate.
